Tcp Performance in a Geostationary Satellite Environment

چکیده
Geostationary satellite links have characteristics that can degrade the performance of TCP. The propagation time for a geostationary satellite link is on the order of 0.25 seconds. Thus a satellite can add approximately 0.5 seconds to the round trip time experienced by a TCP packet and the corresponding acknowledgement. This delay time is the primary cause of TCP inefficiency over satellites. There are some things that can be done to enable TCP to better utilize satellite channels. These practices include using the fast retransmit and fast recovery algorithms, the LFN extensions to TCP, and the use of selective acknowledgements. This paper briefly describes the satellite environment, the problems arising from that environment, along with best common practices for mitigating the problems.

A Simulation Study of Scalable TCP and HighSpeed TCP in Geostationary Satellite Networks
This paper investigates the performance of two TCP enhancements (i.e., Scalable TCP and HighSpeed TCP), recently proposed for high-speed backbone networks with a very large bandwidth-delay product, in a geostationary satellite environment. Both persistent and elastic traffic patterns are considered, performance being evaluated in terms of TCP throughput and mean session delay, respectively. The...

Support of elastic TCP traffic over broadband GEO satellite networks v control algorithm for TCP flows over split-TCP satellite networks that can preserve the target requirements in terms of TCP steady-state throughput and TCP latency. We describe generic fixed-point approximations for the performance of TCP flows in geostationary satellite networks. We provide examples for the method applicabi...
متن کاملParameter tuning, study and performance evaluation of TCP algorithms over geostationary satellite channels
The paper presents a study and a performance analysis of a modified version of the TCP (Transport Control Protocol) over a GEO (Geostationary Orbit) satellite link where the delay in the delivery of a message is very large. The Round Trip Time (RTT) is above 500 ms. TCP has not been designed for these network characteristics: the high delay to receive acknowledgements decreases performance and ...
متن کاملCross-Layer Enhancement to TCP Slow-Start over Geostationary Bandwidth on Demand Satellite Networks
It is well-known that the transmission control protocol (TCP) does not perform well in wireless and satellite environments. We investigate the use of cross-layer design involving the transport and medium access control (MAC) layers in the context of a geostationary bandwidth-on-demand satellite network to simultaneously enhance TCP performance and to improve bandwidth utilization. In this paper...
متن کاملTcp via Satellite Constellations
Many Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) versions have been proposed for terrestrial wired networks over the Internet Protocol (IP), e.g. Tahoe and Reno. TCP/IP is being studied to overcome its limitations within the satellite medium and to allow its efficient use in hybrid terrestrial/satellite networks. So far studies have been mainly directed to the use of Geostationary Earth Orbit (GEO) con...
